Why is it that when you work out while losing weight it helps reduce stretch marks?

I am just wondering why people who don’t work out while losing weight get more stretch marks than those who work out while losing weight? (My guess was that muscle build up helps keep the body from shrinking as fast, but I am really not sure.)
